Global Health Advanced First Aid®
OVERVIEW
We’re offering a three-day Global Health Advanced First Aid® (GHAFA) course taught by University of Colorado School of Medicine faculty. The curriculum is an innovative three-day program to prepare global workers, travelers, and students to identify and respond to common first aid, emergency, and serious medical situations in an international, austere environment. Emphasis is on prevention, assessment, and self-treatment. Instruction includes a combination of lecture, discussion, hands-on practice, and scenarios.
Students successfully completing the GHAFA® class will earn a certificate in Global Health Advanced First Aid® from CU School of Medicine. Students who have completed our Coursera massive open on-line course (MOOC), Foundations for Global Health Responders, will be eligible for the more comprehensive Global Health Responder certification after also taking the GHAFA® course.

GLOBAL HEALTH RESPONDER
You must have completed both the Coursera Foundations course AND the 24-hour GHAFA® course to be certified as a Global Health Responder
What does a Global Health Responder mean?
This title is meant to convey that 1) you have an introductory understanding of global health issues, and 2) you have been trained in 24 hours of first aid care specific to a global health environment (GHAFA®). These skills are designed to keep you and your colleagues safe. They are not designed for you to practice medicine internationally– for that one needs much more training. But we believe the Global Health Responder course is the right place to start to learn these skills in a responsible manner and in an informed context.
What if I did not complete or even take the Coursera course, but would like to take the GHAFA®?
No problem–you can still take the course and receive a certificate for completing a Global Health Advanced First Aid® Course from the CU School of Medicine.
To Reiterate :
- If you complete the Foundations Coursera course + the 24-hour GHAFA® = you are a Global Health Responder!
- If you just complete the 24-hour GHAFA® = you’ll receive a certificate in Global Health Advanced First Aid®
