Evaluation of En Route Care in Simulated Arctic Conditions

 

Study Purpose – This study will assess the impact of extreme cold on performing Tactical Combat Casualty Care (TCCC) relevant tasks. The goal is to increase our understanding of the effects of extreme cold exposure on combat medic dexterity and cognition to enable clinical practical guideline refinement and en route care (ERC) optimization for the cold weather.

What to expect:

  • Participation is completely voluntary.
  • The study team will be providing a virtual overview/information session.
  • If you agree to participate, you will be asked to participate in two (2) trauma simulation – one in room-temperature environment, one in an extreme-cold (-11° F) environment – at the National Science Foundation Ice Core Facility in Lakewood, CO.
  • Each trauma simulation will take up to three (3) hours
    Before and after the trauma simulations, you will be asked to complete a brief series of tests to assess your stress and cognitive function.
  • Eligible participants (non-active military personnel) will be compensated in the amount of $50 for participation.
  • Study will be conducted in early 2024

INCLUSION Criteria:

  • Active duty, reserve component service members, or civilian

  • Currently certified/licensed EMT or paramedic or military medic

EXCLUSION Criteria:

  • Current illness or injury that would increase risk of harm during extreme cold exposure
  • Known inability to complete all study visits within three months of participant enrollment
