Dave first became interested in wilderness medicine after taking a Wilderness First Responder course in preparation to become a trip leader for the American Youth Foundation. After several seasons and many back-country trips with this organization, he entered medical school and decided upon a residency in Emergency Medicine.

After residency, Dave completed a Wilderness Medicine fellowship at the University of Colorado. He was able to visit Nepal twice during this time both as a member of a high-altitude research team as well as a medical team leader after the devastating earthquakes of 2015. The following year, he completed a tour as the station physician at the Amundsen-Scott South Pole Research Station. He has served as a medical volunteer for many races including several Racing the Planet races, completing one as a participant. Dave returned to the University of Colorado as faculty in 2017. His interests in wilderness medicine include ultraendurance races, extreme environments, and disaster response.
