CU STUDENTS: ADVANCED WILDERNESS MEDICINE EMED 8031

OVERVIEW

Advanced Wilderness Medicine, a 4th year medical student course covers a wide-range of Wilderness Medicine topics with an emphasis on case-based learning and outdoor hands-on activities. The first week is spent in and around Rocky Mountain National Park with accommodations at the YMCA of the Rockies. Activities include lectures on practicing medicine in the wilderness and hands-on sessions performing patient assessments, patient packaging, and orienteering. The last day in Estes is reserved for avalanche and snow safety education provided by the Colorado Avalanche Information Center. The second week is spent camping at the Big Bend campground which is beautifully situated along the banks of the Colorado River just outside of Moab, UT. Educational activities again focus on case and scenario-based learning with the week culminating in multi-casualty scenarios and a large orienteering course. Free time is built in, leaving plenty of opportunity to explore Moab.
